Over the past few decades, we have become accustomed to light bulbs, each of which has a life span of about 1000 hours.
The outbreak of energy crisis and environmental movement in the 1970s stimulated the development of more energy-saving technologies. But it was only in recent years that consumers began to come into contact with these energy-saving technologies.
Fluorescent lamps (CFL) first appeared in stores in the mid-1990s, replacing incandescent bulbs as more energy-efficient lamps.
Although fluorescent lamps are very energy-efficient, they have always been unpopular because the light of fluorescent lamps is dim, it takes some time to glow when they are turned on, and they contain mercury, so they need to be handled more carefully if they break down.
Most companies have eliminated fluorescent lamps because of the emergence of better and cheaper LED lamps.
LED lights have been around for several years, but only recently have they become very cheap and the quality of light has improved greatly.
Now that LEDs can emit full spectrum colors, for most people, a good LED bulb emits no different light than an incandescent lamp.
How much can LED lights save?
LED bulbs are still much more expensive than incandescent bulbs. For example, a 100-watt incandescent bulb costs about $0.75, consumes 0.1 degrees of electricity per hour, and has a life span of about 1,000 hours. In contrast, a 23-watt fluorescent bulb produces light of similar quality, but costs about $3, consumes 0.23 watts per hour and has a life of 8,000 hours. To achieve the same lighting level, a 14-watt LED bulb costs $6, consumes 0.014 degrees of electricity per hour and has a life of about 25,000 hours.
In this way, although the cost of the LED bulb itself is higher, it has longer life and lower power consumption.
According to the above calculation of the bulb, according to the electricity charge of 1 yuan per kilowatt hour, a total of 350 yuan is required to pay for the use of an LED bulb. In contrast, the cost of using incandescent lamps at the same time is as high as 2,500 yuan. Savings of 2,000 yuan may not sound very attractive to consumers, but if you consider that a family may have two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom, you need at least five lights. If you use LED bulbs, you can save at least 10,000 yuan, which is not a small number.
Moreover, the LED lamp produces less heat than the incandescent lamp. In hot summer, it can reduce the need for air conditioning and save a lot for users.
Should we replace the LED bulbs?
The answer to this question is obvious. Although the price of LED bulbs is relatively high, one month's electricity savings are enough to offset it.
If you are using a fluorescent lamp now, you don't have to rush to replace it. It's more economical to wait until the light bulb is dead.
LED light bulbs can not only help people save their living costs, but also be more conducive to the environment. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that LED lights will save about 41 billion kW/h in 2014, exceeding the output of a nuclear power plant. If all lighting is switched to LED, the power savings will exceed 30 times. The research also shows that the environmental impact of LED bulbs is much smaller than that of incandescent lamps and energy-saving lamps.
Because LED bulbs use less energy and generate less heat, they are also safer. An incandescent bulb produces enough heat to cause a fire under certain conditions, whereas an LED bulb cannot achieve such a temperature.
